Researcher's Log

I've discovered a small cave just outside of the Kahrati tribal village. The Natives speak of an Ancient evil within this small cavern. My research team and I have opted to see for ourselves whether or not all, or any part of this tribal legend are true. Tomorrow morning we will enter the cave. I have high hopes for our discovery.

Today we entered the cave. From initial examinations, most aspects of the cavern have proven simplistic at best. A few rock formations, various narrow passageways, and other noticeable traits. I wasn't impressed, to say the least. Perhaps tomorrow will be better.

I neglected to write yesterday, because my crew and I happened upon a momentous discovery. Within one of the cave's small antechambers, we discovered a chiseled stone piece. It's base was nearly seven feet wide, and it's height nearly ten feet tall. The markings on the piece indicate that it was most likely an idol of worship for the ancient Kahrati tribe. The condition of the stone on the piece, however, indicates that it's age must be at least several thousand years old, outdating the Kahrati tribe by thousands of years!!! This is a most fascinating discovery indeed!!

Remarkable!! The stone piece gives off a mystifyingly luminous glimmer, and yet...it's composition is that of stone. Stranger still, this piece only gives off it's radiant glow when I, or one of my researchers comes within a few feet of the piece. I've yet to figure out exactly what properties of this piece give it it's glow. In time, however, I soon will!! This could possibly turn out to be one of the greatest discoveries of all time!!!

My research crew has come into a bit of bad luck. Various members of my crew have fallen dreadfully ill. The diagnosis is uncertain. The sickness is unlike anything i've ever seen before. We must return to town soon for medical treatment, or they will surely die.

Poor Johnson. The fellow died in his sleep last night. It's hard to explain really. He appeared the most healthy of the group. And the rest of my men still complain of severe discomfort, and pain, along with terrible nightmares. And now that I think about it, I haven't been feeling well myself lately.

Doctor Mathers doesn't have a clue what's afflicting my crew. He says it's nothing biological, though outward signs say different. Samuel Craw, my dearest friend, and colleague, has resolved to continue with our research. I agreed, reluctantly. Tomorrow we will return to the cave.

Four more died today. Dear God, what's happening to them all!!! The Kahrati's spoke of an Ancient curse upon the land. Me being a man of science, I scoffed at the idea. The idea of a curse seems so ludicrous, that I did not give it a second thought. And I NEVER will!

Word has just reached me from town. Peter McGuffries, one of my crewmen, has gone missing from his hospital bed. Authorities cannot find him. There have been reports of a lion in the area. A man and woman were found disemboweled today. The people have been instructed to go into their homes, and do not come out until the beast has been found, and killed. I sincerely hope Peter has not fallen victim to this barbaric beast's rampage.
